LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior golfer Kim Kaufman took the opening-round lead at the South Dakota Women's Amateur Championship Friday after shooting a 2-under 70 at the Brookings Country Club.
Kaufman, who is a two-time champion of the event, has a four-stroke lead over Karla Murra after 18 holes as she was the only player in the 30-person field to fire an under-par round. She is being caddied this weekend by teammate Elin Arvidsson.
The Clark, S.D. native won the event following her freshman season in 2009 as well as a year ago. She won the 2011 title after shooting three-straight rounds in the 60s en route to finishing with a commanding nine-stroke lead.
Kaufman continues the 54-hole tournament with Saturday's second round. She will tee off with Murra and Maggie Murphy at 9:10 a.m. in the final pairing of the day.
