Mathieu Wins Gold in 4x400 Relay

LONDON - Former Texas Tech standout Michael Mathieu helped guide the Bahamian 4x400 relay team to a gold medal Friday evening at the 2012 London Olympics.
Mathieu, running the third leg of the relay, helped the Bahamas to outlast the U.S. with a time of 2:56.72 - a national record for the Bahamas. The U.S. finished second to win silver with a time of 2:57.05
"He is just always steady," Texas Tech head track and field coach Wes Kittley said. "It's just phenomenal. I'm so proud of him. He is a school record and now a gold medalist in the Olympics."
Former Lady Raider Shereefa Lloyd helped the Jamaican women's 4x400 relay team qualify for the finals earlier Friday with a fourth place finish in the preliminaries. The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 2:25 p.m.
The gold is the first in school history for a former track and field athlete, and the second for Mathieu as he helped guide the Bahamas to a silver medal in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics.
Former Lady Raider Sally Kipyego won silver last week in the women's 10,000-meter run before narrowly medaling again with a fourth place finish in the finals of the 5,000-meter run Friday.
Mathieu and the Bahamas qualified for the finals of the men's 4x400 relay Thursday as the team first in the preliminaries with a time of 2:58.87. He also advanced to the semifinals of the men's 200-meter dash this week before being disqualified for a false-start on Wednesday.
At Tech, Mathieu helped to set the current school record in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:01.69 during the 2005 season and was a three-time All-American.
