LUBBOCK, Texas - In the final preseason test prior to opening the 2012 regular season, the Texas Tech volleyball team fell, 3-2, in the annual alumni match held at the United Spirit Arena.
"It's great to have the alumni back," second-year head coach Don Flora said. "We had several newcomers on the court, so we learned a lot in this match. It was nice to be able to play five sets and be tied 2-2 and compete. It was a good start to 2012."
The alumni team, which featured former standouts Amanda Dowdy, Barbara Conceicao, Amy Gandy, Laura Gottschalk, and Kiley Lyons among others, took the opening two sets, 25-18, 25-19, before rebounding from two-straight losses to take the fifth, 15-8.
Tech recovered from the early deficit to take with consecutive 25-23 victories. With less than a week before the regular-season opener, Flora played the majority of his 21-player roster which includes 11 newcomers and one redshirt returner.
Tech opens the 2012 season next Friday morning at the Boston College Invitational when the Red Raiders face Fordham at 9 a.m. in the first of four matches during the weekend tournament.
