LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Rachel Brummitt was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Monday afternoon after earning tournament MVP honors last weekend at the Boston College Invitational.
Brummitt, a native of Plano, Texas, totaled 68 digs from the libero position en route to helping lead the Red Raiders to their first 4-0 start since 2003. She finished the weekend averaging 4.25 digs per set which ranks fourth in the conference.
In the Red Raiders' 3-0 victory over Binghamton Friday evening, Brummitt tied the Tech school record for digs in a three-set match with 24 against the Bearcats. Sheila Solomon had previously set the record 21 years ago against Houston on Nov. 16, 1990.
In addition to her defensive work, Brummitt was also instrumental in keeping opponents off-balanced with her serve as she totaled eight aces, including four in a 3-1 victory over Siena. Her eight aces were the most among conference players last weekend while her 0.50 aces per set average ranked fifth in the league.
Brummitt, who was an All-Big South Conference selection as a freshman at Radford University last year, was the first Tech player to record four or more aces in a match since Caroline Witte against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 19, 2008.
She is the first Tech player to receive a conference weekly award since Tory Vaughan was also honored as the defensive player of the week on Oct. 31 last year. Tech has now garnered four weekly awards under second-year head coach Don Flora.
The Red Raiders open their home schedule this weekend with the Lonestar Showdown where Texas-Pan American, San Jose State, and Northwestern State will all travel to Lubbock for the two-day tournament that begins Friday afternoon at the United Spirit Arena.
