
Red Raiders, Lady Raiders Sweep Opening Meet of 2012 Season

The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders swept the Texas Tech Open Friday in Ruidoso, N.M.

RUIDOSO, N.M. - The Texas Tech men's and women's cross country teams had a successful start to the season, both capturing wins at the Texas Tech Open meet Friday in Ruidoso.
The Red Raiders, which swept the top four finishes, won 46-14 over Wayland Baptist. Meanwhile the Lady Raiders, sweeping the top three finishes, took home a win over Wayland Baptist 44-17.
"It was a great start to the season," eighth year head coach Jon Murray said. "We were excited about our performances today by both squads."
Junior Kennedy Kithuka, a transfer from Wayland Baptist, led the Red Raiders in the four-mile run with a course record time of 19:40.89. The mark broke the previous record of 21:23.30 set by former Red Raider Gilbert Limo. Kithuka was followed by teammates Ezekiel Kissorio (20:51.60), Marcos Vallejo (21:18.60) and Jonathon Lira (21:27.50).
Madeline Livergood paced the Lady Raiders with a time of 18:45.80 in the three-mile run. She was followed by teammates Rachel Folan (19:17.80), and Chelsea Scott (19:22.70).
Texas Tech will return home to host the Texas Tech Red Raider Open meet in Lubbock on Sept. 14.
