IRVING, Texas -- Texas Tech's Sharlene Nickle has been tabbed as the Big 12 Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week after her performance at the Chile Pepper Festival.
Nickle, a senior out of Clarendon, Jamaica, ran the 5,000-meter course in Fayetteville in 16:53.7, good enough for 13th place out of 374 athletes. She led Texas Tech to a fifth-place finish in a field containing Arkansas, UTEP, Kansas State, TCU and Baylor, among others.
Nickle is the first Red Raider to be named Big 12 Runner of the Week since Rose Tanui, in 2011.
"This is a nice honor for Sharlene," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "It exemplifies the hard work she has been doing. I'm proud of her."
Nickle and the Red Raiders will be back in action on Oct. 18, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, in Terre Haute, Ind.
