LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Texas Tech men's cross country team took seventh overall, and the women took ninth at the 2014 Big 12 Cross Country Championships, in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday morning.
"There were a lot of personal-best times today," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "Both teams competed to the best of their ability. It was a great learning experience for this young group."
On the men's side, Tech was led by Evans Tuitoek (25:17.1) and Nick Rivera (25:37.0), who took 36th and 44th, respectively, in the 8,000-meter race. They were joined in the top 55 by Ebenether Wondaferew (25:48.8), and Miguel Bautista (25:52.3), who finished 51st and 52nd, respectively.
As a team, Tech finished with a score of 200, good enough for seventh place overall.
On the women's side, as they have all year, Sharlene Nickle and Jocelyn Caro led the way for the Lady Raiders, earning top-30 finishes. Nickle took 19th, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 21:02.1. It's her second-straight top-20 finish at the Big 12 Championships. Caro (21:27.6) placed 26th.
The Tech women finished ninth, with an overall score of 212.
Texas Tech cross country will be back in action on Nov. 14, at the Mountain Region Championships, in Albuquerque, N.M.
