LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech Red Raider and Lady Raider cross-country teams will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the 2014 NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships, which will take place this Friday, Nov. 14.
The 6,000-meter women's race is set to begin at 1 p.m., CST, while the 10,000-meter men's race is slated to follow at 2 p.m, CST.
The Lady Raiders are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, where senior Sharlene Nickle placed 19th and sophomore Jocelyn Caro finished 26th. The duo has accounted for two first place finishes and 10 top-15 finishes in the 2014 season.
This meet will be the second consecutive year for Caro and Nickle to compete at the Mountain Regional. The Lady Raiders are looking to improve on last year's 14th-place finish.
"On the ladies' side it would be great to have two all-region athletes who place in the top 30 individuals," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said." I expect Sharlene [Nickle] and Jocelyn [Caro] to continue the good seasons they are having."
The Red Raiders will enter the meet coming off a seventh-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, led by sophomore Evans Tuitoek and junior Nick Rivera, a combination that has recorded 10 top-10 finishes this season.
Rivera is competing in his third-consecutive Mountain Regional. The young Red Raiders hope to improve on their 12th-place team finish in 2013.
"On the men's side this is the toughest region in the country with up to seven teams that could go onto the national race," Murray said. "Evans [Tuitoek] and Nick [Rivera] need to show their continued leadership for us."
