June 08, 2014 | Baseball
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program finished the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with four student-athletes selected as junior right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno (Farmington, N.M.) was drafted in the 33rd round (1,005th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals on the third and final day of the draft Saturday afternoon.
It marked the 10th time during the last 11 years that Texas Tech has had at least four players selected in the MLB Draft, as Moreno joined junior left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry (6th Round - Miami), junior catcher Hunter Redman (8th Round - Los Angeles Dodgers) and junior shortstop Tim Proudfoot (21st Round - Oakland).
Moreno is the first Red Raider selected in the draft by the Cardinals since 2004 when the Red Birds drafted Tech shortstop Cameron Blair with the 540th overall pick in the 18th round.
Moreno was the 19th pitcher selected by the Cardinals and was their 17th right-handed pitcher taken in this year's draft.
Moreno has served as Tech's Friday-night starter this season and last season and also pitched crucial innings out of the Red Raider bullpen this year. He is 4-5 with a 3.17 ERA in 20 appearances (8 starts) with two saves, 65.1 innings pitched, 67 hits allowed and 56 strikeouts with just 24 walks while opponents are batting .269.
Moreno has been the Red Raiders Opening Day starter the past two seasons as he became the first Tech pitcher to start back-to-back Opening Days since current Colorado Rockies right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis (2009-10).
Texas Tech had five incoming student-athletes selected in the draft with left-handed pitcher Tanner Scott (Howard College) taken in the sixth round (181st overall) by the Baltimore Orioles, right-handed junior-college pitcher Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western CC) drafted in the 17th round by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 504th overall pick, outfielder Rudy Martin (Lewisburg, Miss.) taken in the 25th round by the Kansas City Royals, junior-college catcher Kholeton Sanchez (New Mexico JC) drafted in the 32nd round to the Los Angeles Angels and right-handed pitcher/outfielder Patrick Mahomes going in the 37th round to the Detroit Tigers.
