Brummitt And Douglass Earn Big 12 Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas -- Texas Tech's Rachel Brummitt and Lauren Douglass have been named the Big 12 Volleyball Defensive Player and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced today.
Brummitt was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Lone Star Showdown, recording 71 digs over the weekend (5.92 per set), which led the Big 12 for the week, including a 39-dig performance against Air Force, which broke both her school record and Big 12 four-set record-a 36-dig performance against Oklahoma in 2013.
This is the second time Brummitt has won this award in 2014, and the fifth time overall, which gives her the most Big 12 volleyball weekly awards in Texas Tech history. Her five defensive weekly awards rank fifth in Big 12 history.
"Rachel has been a constant force for our serve receive, and has obviously been great defensively," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "Her growth as a communicator on the court is also great to see. She had 39 digs in a four-set match, and could have been better. That tells you the type of player she is."
Douglass was named the MVP of the Lone Star Showdown, where she amassed 41 kills, including a career-high 17 in Tech's thrilling comeback against Weber State, a game in which she also had eight blocks. She hit .383 for the weekend, which was good enough to move her to No. 1 in the Big 12 in hitting percentage in 2014.
Douglass becomes the first Red Raider to win two of the Big 12's three weekly awards, having already won the conference's Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 1. She shares the Rookie of the Week honor with Madison Rigdon of Kansas.
"Lauren continues to develop and it is nice to see her hard work get rewarded," Flora said. "She is just beginning to find her rhythm again, so this type of output is great this early in the season."
Tech's four weekly honors in 2014 are the second most for a single year in school history, behind only the five honors received in 2012.
The 12-0 Red Raiders will open Big 12 play this Wednesday against TCU, at 6 p.m., in the United Supermarkets Arena.
