PALACE VERDES, Calif. - Texas Tech's Lynn Kiro extended her school-record winning streak to 19 straight matches dating back to last season, as she secured a spot in the qualifying portion of the Riviera/ITA All-American at the Riviera Tennis Club on Sunday.
Kiro, who is ranked No. 83 nationally in singles, battled back from a first-set loss to Gabrielle Otero of New Mexico to pull out a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win. Otero was looking for her second straight upset of a seeded player after ousting Yale's Hannah Yu on Saturday.
With three matches under her belt, Kiro advances to the qualifying portion of the All-American. She is one of eight student-athletes of the 64-person prequalifying event to earn a spot in the next round. Kiro is also just the third Lady Raider to advance to qualifying in singles, joining Samantha Adams (2013) and Kelsey Garland (2009).
Kiro closed out the 2013-14 season winning 16 straight matches and has now won three straight to start the 2014-15 season. Her last loss came against UNM's Merideth Hopson on Feb. 16.
Kilgo, who is ranked No. 113 nationally, was not as lucky, as she fell to Florida State's Daneika Borthwick, 6-1, 6-2. Kilgo closes out play in the All-American at 2-1 in singles.
There was good news and bad news in doubles, as Kilgo and Kiro fell to the Georgia tandem of Caroline Brinson and Hannah King, 8-6, on Sunday. But due to a withdrawal, Kilgo and Kiro have advanced to qualifying as a lucky loser qualifier.
Kiro will return to action in qualifying singles on Tuesday, while Kiro and Kilgo will begin play in doubles qualifying on Tuesday as well.
