LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Texas Tech looks to extend its winning streak to six straight, as the Red Raiders take on Boise State at Noon CT on Friday in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA.
The Red Raiders are vying to earn one of 16 spots in the 2015 ITA Indoor National Team Championships. In all, Texas Tech is one of 64 schools invited to compete in the event, which opens with 16 four-team pods.
Texas Tech enters the event after winning the Arizona Kickoff event last weekend. The Red Raiders played six matches in four days, winning five after dropping the opener.
"I think it was a good opportunity for us to get some match experience under our belt," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "I thought we grew up a lot in four days. Now it's on to Los Angeles and two more tough matches."
After opening with Boise State, the Red Raiders will face UCLA or Pepperdine on Saturday. The winner of the Boise State-Texas Tech match will face the winner of UCLA-Pepperdine at 5 p.m. CT. The consolation match between the two non-winning teams is slated for 8 p.m. CT on Saturday.
The Red Raider are led by No. 28 Felipe Soares (10-6), who is holding down the No. 1 spot. He is followed in the lineup by Hugo Dojas (7-3). Newcomers Victor Cornea (3-1) and Alex Sendegeya (5-4) are expected to fill the No. 3 and No. 4 spot in the rotation, while Jolan Cailleau (9-7) holds down the fifth spot. The last spot in the singles lineup could either be field by Francisco Zambon (6-6) or Connor Curry (4-8).
One area that is vastly improved is doubles for the Red Raiders. The addition of Cornea and Sendegeya has helped bolster the doubles rotation. The tandem of Soares and Dojas hold the top spot as the duo is 8-2 on the season and No. 35 in the country.
Sendegeya and Cornea are teaming at the No. 2 spot. The two mid-season enrollees are 1-0 as a tandem after arriving two weeks ago. The third spot is expected to go to the duo of Zambon and Curry, who are 1-2 as a team.
