LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 29 Texas Tech (3-1) took two of three doubles matches and three of four singles matches to top No. 28 Auburn (3-2), 4-1, at the Lubbock Country Club Saturday.
"It's amazing how much we grew up in 24 hours from last night to today," said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. "We won every pressure point today it seemed like. We were the ones that won the big moments. We played the big moments so well mentally and mature and for five 18-year olds who have never stepped foot on a campus in a pressure situation, it was impressive."
The duo of Kenna Kilgo and Sarah Dvorak fell to Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger, 6-4, to start off doubles, but Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici evened the score defeating Paula de Man and Michala Kucharova, 6-3. Gabriela Talaba and Hortense Boscher then came up huge in doubles outdueling Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler, 7-5, to give the Lady Raiders the 1-0 lead.
"There's a lot of work to be done in doubles. When you can get that momentum off early and I really like the top part of our lineup," said Petty. "This is a strong as we have been at the top part of our lineup, so you're not afraid of putting them on the court first and they stepped up and did their job today."
No. 35 Lynn Kiro started the singles matches with a dominating (6-1, 6-2) win over Reka Muller to give the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead. Texas Tech's Talaba then closed out a straight-set victory to go up 3-0.
Auburn didn't go down without a fight, however, as Pleun Burgmans defeated Kenna Kilgo 6-2, 7-5 to earn their first point of the day, and Emily Flickinger took the first set from No. 89 Sarah Dvorak.
But much like the Lady Raiders came up clutch in doubles, Dvorak took matters into her own hands in the second set. Trailing 2-3, Dvorak won four of the next five games to win the set 6-4. She then jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the third set before taking the match and clinching the victory for the Lady Raiders with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
"When the big points came, we stepped up and made some plays," said Petty. "They really took to heart how to compete and what fearless really means.
"It proves to them and gives them confidence that we can play with anybody. It proves that their hard work is paying off. It also proves there is a lot of work to be done.
Texas Tech will host Ole Miss on Friday at 5 p.m. and Rice on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Lubbock.
