MANHATTAN, Kan. - Since Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty took over the Texas Tech program in 2008, he has been a part of a lot of firsts.
On Sunday, Petty added to the list, as he became the first head coach Since Mickey Bowes to lead five straight teams to 12 wins in a season, as No. 17 Texas Tech toppled Kansas State, 4-0 at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
Bowes did it for 10 straight seasons (1980-89) and is the winningest coach in program history - 156-89 (63.7 percent). Petty is second on the list in wins - 107-59 (65.7 percent).
The day started with a battle in doubles, as Tech's Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson crushed Tegan Louw and Maria Panaite, 6-0. Kansas State answered with a 6-1 win at No. 1, as Palma Juhasz and Carolina Costamagna upset Kenna Kilgo and Gabriela Talaba.
The point was settled at No. 2, where Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici outlasted Iva Bago and Livia Cirnu, 7-6 (7-3).
Jackson picked right up where she left off, cruising past Louw, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. No. 59 Kiro almost picked up the double bagel with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Cirnu.
Leading 3-0 on the scoreboard there were still four more courts in play, with the Lady Raiders leading on three of them. But it was freshman Gabriela Talaba, who answered the call with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bago at No. 3, giving Texas Tech a 4-0 win over the Wildcats.
The No. 17 Lady Raiders will now travel to Austin to face No. 54 Texas (3-7) on next Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Caswell Tennis Center.
