LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech volleyball team will begin its spring slate of matches and tournaments this weekend, with a match at Wayland Baptist on March 27, and the LCU Tournament on March 28.
The Red Raiders will compete in matches and tournaments spanning the next four weeks. Tech faces off against Wayland Baptist on Friday, at 3:30 p.m., in Plainview, Texas, in a match that will be one set, with the first to five games winning the match.
On Saturday, Tech will take part in the LCU Tournament, which is to be held at Lubbock Christian High School and the Rip Griffin Center. The Red Raiders play West Texas A&M at 10 a.m. at LCHS, before moving over to the Rip Griffin Center for a match against Lubbock Christian University at 1:30 p.m. Immediately following that match, Tech will take on Midwestern State before moving back over to LCHS for a 4:00 p.m. match against Wayland Baptist. Each match will be the first to two out of three sets.
Tech will also compete in a tournament at New Mexico State University on April 11, and will take part in the College Showcase in Dallas on April 18. Schedules and opponents for those tournaments are TBA.
The Red Raiders are coming off their first .500 season or better since 2001, which featured a 13-0 start, four non-conference tournament wins and a thrilling five-set win in Waco over Baylor--Tech's first win in Waco since 2004.
Tech returns two All-Big 12 performers in 2015--Jenna Allen, who led the team and ranked seventh in the Big 12, with 3.10 kills per set, along with notching 11 double-doubles, and Lauren Douglass, who was MVP of both the Titan Classic and the Lone Star Showdown. Douglass had the highest hitting percentage on the team (.303), which also ranked ninth in the Big 12. The Red Raiders also return seven additional athletes who started in at least one match in 2014.
The incoming freshman class may be the most decorated one to date during head coach Don Flora's tenure in Lubbock. Katy Keenan, Alexis Burke, Sarah Redding, Reyn Akiu, Katelyn Bryant and Morgan Reed combine for five All-State honors, 10 All-District selections and three state titles. Four of the six athletes were named to the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour All-American Watch List..
