LUBBOCK, Texas - Coming off of a pair of Top 25 wins over the weekend, including upending No. 1 Oklahoma, Texas Tech climbed seven spot to No. 16 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association men's rankings released Tuesday.
This is only the fifth different season in program history that the Red Raiders have been ranked inside the ITA Top 16. Texas Tech reached as high as No. 9 in 2005, climbed to No. 16 in 2008, reached No. 13 in 2010 and spent time at No. 15 in 2011. Texas Tech began the season at No. 41 and has since climbed 25 spots to No. 16. The Red Raiders are 18-6 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
Five different Red Raiders have earned individual rankings this week, led by junior Felipe Soares (20-12), who is No. 33 in singles after spending last week at No. 35. Jolan Cailleau (24-9) is ranked No. 107, while Alex Sendegeya (19-7) enters the rankings at No. 113.
In doubles, the tandem of Soares and Hugo Dojas (14-6) are coming off of a pair of ranked wins and jumped from No. 33 to No. 16. Soares is also ranked with freshman Connor Curry. The duo is No. 71.
The Big 12 features five teams in the ITA Top 16, more than any other league - No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Baylor, No. 7 TCU, No. 10 Texas and No. 16 Texas Tech.
Texas Tech is now in the conversation to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships. The selection committee almost always give the opportunity to host to the nation's Top 16 teams. The Red Raiders last hosted the first and second rounds in 2005.
Texas Tech will close out the regular season on Saturday night against No. 2 Baylor (18-4, 2-1 Big 12) at the McLeod Tennis Center.
