LUBBOCK, Texas -- After recording a pair of ranked singles wins last week, Texas Tech freshman Alex Sendegeya has been named the Big 12 Conference men's tennis player of the week.
Sendegeya, a native of Liverpool, England, is the first Red Raider to win the award since former All-American Gonzalo Escobar was honored on Apr. 24, 2012. He is just the second Texas Tech freshman to ever win the award, joining Christian Rojmar, who captured the honor in 2006.
The Englishman, who is the former No. 1 junior in Great Britain, teamed with Jolan Cailleau to secure the doubles point against No. 25 Oklahoma State and then routed No. 118 Arjun Kdhe, 6-0, 6-1, to give Texas Tech a 2-0 lead en route to a 4-3 win over the Cowboys.
After the doubles point was secured against No. 1 Oklahoma, Sendegeya upset No. 30 Dane Webb in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, for another 2-0 lead, as the Red Raiders helped on for a 4-3 win. The win over No. 30 Web is the biggest win in Sendegeya's young career.
Since the start of Big 12 play, Sendegeya has face four straight ranked opponents going 2-1 with one abandoned match. His 19 singles wins are the most by a freshman since Raphael Pfister won 23 matches in 2010.
Texas Tech will close out the regular season on Saturday night against No. 2 Baylor (18-4, 2-1 Big 12) at the McLeod Tennis Center.
