FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Lady Raiders found themselves in a hole they could not escape on Saturday at the Friedman Tennis Center, as No. 19 TCU upset No. 15 Texas Tech, 4-0.
The loss drops Texas Tech (17-5, 7-2) out of first place in the Big 12 Conference and the Lady Raiders are now currently tied for second with TCU (17-7, 7-2).
"100 percent of the credit goes to TCU," said Red Raider head coach Todd Petty, "They were better than us today. The ladies competed well to get back into the match, but at the end of the day TCU was the better team."
The Horned Frogs started the day with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 in doubles to take the first point.
The Red Raiders were in every match in the first set, but somehow TCU won the first frame of all six singles matches.
Seda Arantekin defeated Katelyn Jackson, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 to give TCU a 2-0 lead. No. 42 Simona Parajova then topped Gabriela Talaba, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 at No. 2.
Texas Tech would win the second set on the remaining four matches to send each to the third. The Lady Raiders were closing in on possible wins at three positions when No. 88 Stefanie Tan upset Tech's No. 65 Kenna Kilgo, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 1 to give the Horned Frogs the 4-0 win.
Texas Tech will now turn its sights towards the Big 12 Championship Tournament slated to start Thursday in Waco. The Lady Raiders most likely earn the No. 2 seed in the event, but there is an outside chance of getting the No. 3 seed.
