Weldon Sweeps Shot Put & Discus In California

Kole Weldon won both the shot put and discus late Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational, in Azusa, Calif.
AZUSA, Calif. -- Kole Weldon swept the shot put and discus events at the 2015 Bryan Clay Invitational, defeating nearly 120 combined throwers in the process, in Azusa, Calif., late Friday night.
Weldon had a season-best launch of 18.82m/61-9.0 on his first attempt of the night in the shot put, and that mark held up against a field of 47 throwers, as Weldon won the event by just over six feet. In the discus, Weldon's second throw of the night, a 55.84m/183-2 toss, gave him the win by nearly three feet against a field of nearly 70 competitors.
Weldon has now won a throwing event seven times during the 2015 outdoor season. This also marks the third time Weldon has won at least two events at the same meet, in 2015.
Hannah Carson took third in the women's discus at the Clay Invite, with a best throw of 51.48m/168-11. She has yet to finish below fourth in any event this season. J'Cee Pool placed 13th, with a throw of 44.85m/147-02.
On the track, Jasmine Torres (17:32.91), Hattie Schunk (17:34.48) and Madeline Livergood (17:50.34) all ran outdoor collegiate bests in the 5,000 meters, finishing 47th, 49th and 65th in a field of 138 runners.
Tech picked up more solid marks in the distance events at the Mt. SAC Relays, in Walnut, Calif., late Friday night.
Evans Tuitoek finished 10th overall but seventh among collegians in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. His time of 8:57.13 ranks 28th in the nation among times entering this weekend's competition.
Nick Rivera ran a personal-best 3:46.63 in the 1,500 meters to take fourth in a field of 71 runners. Todd Mickey also ran an outdoor collegiate-best time, a 3:52.90, to place 39th. Rivera also took 35th in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:55.55.
Miguel Bautista ran an outdoor collegiate-best 15:04.20 to take 30th in the 5,000 meters, and on the women's side, Jocelyn Caro ran a 16:46.02 to place 10th in the 5,000 meters.
Texas Tech track & field is back in action today in California, as Carson will throw the javelin at the Mt. SAC Relays. The majority of Texas Tech track & field will compete in the Michael Johnson Classic, today, in Waco, Texas.
