DES MOINES, Iowa -- Great qualifying performances by the sprint relays led the way for the Texas Tech No. 10 men's and No. 18 women's track & field teams on day two of the Drake Relays, in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday.
The men's 4 x 100 quartet of Nigel Bethel, Joseph Richards III, Steven Champlin and Trevor Mackey started it off, winning heat four of the prelims, with a season-best time of 40.38, good enough to qualify for tomorrow's final.
The men's 4 x 400 relay followed suit, qualifying for the final as well. It wasn't the normal lineup, but Richards III, Kyle Collins, C.J. Jones and Kareem McBride earned qualification, with a mark of 3:08.22, placing sixth overall.
The 4 x 400 meter relay went well on the women's side as well for Tech. Cierra White, Lygia Forman, Natalie Thompson and Montenae Speight ran a 3:38.29 to win heat four of the prelims. All three relays will compete for titles tomorrow.
Elsewhere on the track, White ran the top qualifying time in the women's 100 meters, an 11.47, which puts her in great position for tomorrow's final.
Darien Tennon earned a time qualification into the men's 110 meter hurdles final, after running a 14.54 in this afternoon's prelims.
Trevor Mackey just missed out on the men's 100 meter dash final, placing eighth with a 10.72, which happened to be into a stiff headwind, and Kyle Thompson placed fifth in the pole vault, with a clearance of 5.07m/16-7.50.
Texas Tech track & field will be back in action in Des Moines tomorrow morning, with running events starting at 8 a.m., and field events getting underway at 9 a.m. Tech will also compete at the West Texas A&M Twilight Open tomorrow, with field events getting started at noon, and running events beginning at 4:45 p.m.
