LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech senior Meghan Stacy's team-high nine kills and 16 digs led the way for the Black team's 3-0 win over the Red squad in Tech Volleyball's annual Red and Black Match at the United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Black team claimed the first set, 25-17, took the second set, 25-19, and closed out a back-and-forth third set with a 20-18 triumph.
It was the final preseason match for the Red Raiders before they open the regular season next Friday at home at the Texas Tech Fall Invitational.
"I believe we learned some things about how to play point-to-point and handle the demands of our jobs," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said.
The Black team put together a balanced attack that featured four players with seven or more kills. Along with Stacy's nine, senior Brianna Grant tallied eight and sophomores Victoria Hinneburg and Audrey Fragniere each posted seven over the three-set match. On the other side, sophomore Alyssa Ybanez led the Red team with 10 kills.
Junior Marguerite Grubb recorded 31 assists, which led to the Black team's attack percentage of .181, compared to the Red team's .060.
"Marguerite and her team defended at a very high level," Flora said. "Marguerite also a had really balanced distribution of her offense. That is a tremendous level of finding the right attackers at the best time."
The Black team also sported four players with double-digit digs: Stacy (16), Ashley Morgan (12), Fragniere (11) and Carlie Foust (11).
Freshman Alexis Burke racked up six blocks for the Black team, with Hinneburg closely followed with five. On the Red team's side, junior Lauren Douglass tallied five blocks.
"Overall, this clearly shows the growth from our preseason work and makes our next few days of match preparation imperative," Flora said.
The Red Raiders begin the 2015 regular season against Utah State on Friday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m., at the United Supermarkets Arena.
