LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, marking the fourth time in five years the Red Raiders have earned the distinction.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
In the fall, the Red Raiders landed a total of nine athletes on the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball teams, the second most in the conference.
Out of the three athletes in the entire conference who were selected with 4.0 GPAs, two were Red Raiders--Marguerite Grubb and Nicole Hragyil.
"As this volleyball program continues to be champions in multiple areas of life and on the court, it is a cool sign to see this transfer to the classroom as an entire team," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "The support and focus for one's teammates in the academic realm is something we place a value on and measure. So, our staff is pleased to see this area of overall success."
The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but one, while amassing a 476 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current record number of 752.
Texas Tech volleyball begins its 2015 campaign on Aug. 28 at the Texas Tech Fall Invitational, at the United Supermarkets Arena.
