ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- In the first meeting between the two programs, Texas Tech (7-2) picked up a 3-0 victory over Navy (2-7) at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Wesley A Brown Field House.
The Red Raiders recorded a 25-21 win in set one, a dominating 25-14 set two victory, and mirrored the first frame by closing out the match, 25-21, in the third set.
Four Red Raiders notched six or more kills, with Katy Keenan leading the way with nine, followed by Lauren Douglass (7), Sarah Redding (6) and Jenna Allen (6). Tech totaled 40 kills, with nine different Red Raiders contributing to the attack for a final hitting percentage of .295.
Keenan also led the team hitting percentage, with a .615 clip, as well as blocks, stuffing four, to give her a season total of 18.
"We have a number of people contributing to our success," head coach Don Flora said. "It is great to see the level of support for each other's teammates."
The Red Raiders opened up the first set with a 6-0 run, working their way to a 20-12 lead, before Navy answered to cut the lead to 23-20 late in the frame. A pair of kills from Meghan Stacy and Alyssa Ybanez, who each had three in the first set, put the bow on the first for Tech. Lauren Douglass lead the team with four in the first, giving the trio 10 of the team's 14 kills in set one.
In the second, Tech only put up 10 kills, but did not commit any errors, putting together a .385 clip, while Navy's eight errors played a part in the Red Raider's 25-14 win. Through two, Marguerite Grubb (assists) and Carlie Foust (digs) had tallied double-digit marks with 20 and 10, respectively.
"It was nice to play very clean volleyball in set two," Flora said. "If we can continue to grow and stay balanced offensively, we have a chance to get better each match."
The third frame mirrored the first, with a 25-21 victory, but saw Keenan post five kills to pass Douglass for the team lead. Four of Allen's six kills came in the final set, as well as half of Redding's six. Tech added 16 kills and 12 assists and digs each, giving Grubb 32 and Foust 13 for the match, respectively.
While holding Navy to attack percentages below .100 in the second (.032) and third (.094) sets, the Midshipmen were just able to creep above that mark for a final average of .115.
Tech returns to the court for the final match of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at 5 p.m. CT against George Washington.
