LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech cross country juniors Evans Tuitoek and Jocelyn Caro garnered Big 12 Runner of the Week honors for their performances at the ACU Open, the league announced today.
It's the first time since 2006 Texas Tech has swept the award, when Kevin Chelimo and Sally Kipyego received the accolades.
Tuitoek, a native of Baringo, Kenya, led the Red Raiders to a victory over Abilene Christian after posting a first-place finish in the men's 6k at 18:46.45. It's the ninth-straight meet he's recorded the top time for Texas Tech, dating back to last season.
"This is a nice honor for Evans as he starts the season," head coach Jon Murray said. "He has done some great work during the offseason and I anticipate him continuing his progress."
Caro, from El Paso, Texas, paced to a second-place finish at the ACU Open on Friday, Sept. 18. Her time of 18:18.37 in the women's 5k led the way for the Red Raiders for the sixth time in her career. It was also the fifth meet that she has finished in the top five of all competitors.
"Jocelyn has been one of our leaders for several years," Murray said. "This is just another example of how smart work pays off. She is starting the year off right."
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
