TYLER, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes II (Whitehouse, Texas/Whitehouse H.S.) was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week on Wednesday. It marked his second weekly honor as he also earned the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Award on Monday.
Each week during the regular season, an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose National Player of the Week will be selected by a committee leading up to the finalist announcement in December. The selection committee is comprised of Texas-based journalists and college football dignitaries and, in subsequent years, each of the all-time winners.
Presented by the City of Tyler, the Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the nation's top offensive player who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
Mahomes led the Big 12 in total offense (473 yards), yards passing (425) and passes completed (33) in Texas Tech's 59-45 win over Sam Houston State. He completed a career-high 33 of 53 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns, with 322 of those yards in the first half. Mahomes also ran for a career-high 48 yards on five carries with a career-long of 24 yards. He has now thrown for 300 or more yards and four or more touchdown passes in four consecutive games. It is the second Big 12 weekly honor for Mahomes, who was also named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on December 1, 2014 following his 598-yard, six touchdown effort against Baylor.
Texas Tech (1-0) is back in action when it hosts UTEP (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Jones AT&T Stadium. Season tickets are still on sale and can be purchased by calling 806-742-TECH or by visiting www.texastech.com.
