LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell victim to an uncharacteristic barrage of three-pointers from Oklahoma State on Wednesday, losing 69-46 at United Supermarkets arena.Tech (9-5, 0-3) was held to season lows in points (46) and field goal percentage (32.7%), as well as season lows for points in a quarter (5, second quarter) and points in a half (17, first half). The Lady Raiders are now on a season-long three-game losing streak.
Oklahoma State (12-2, 2-1) was sparked by Plainview, Texas, native Karli Wheeler, who entered the night averaging 3.8 points per game, but struck for a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.
"It was a tough night for us, especially on the offensive end," Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker said. "We were mixing up defenses, but they just got hot from three-point range. Obviously Karli Wheeler had a good night, five-for-nine on threes and she had six on the year entering tonight, so she almost doubled her makes in this ball game. However, you've got to give Oklahoma State credit. I thought they guarded well and obviously hit shots when they needed to, but they were hard to guard. We just didn't get much going offensively."
The first half was a good, old-fashioned Big 12 slugfest. A 6-0 Tech run, entirely scored by Rayven Brooks, gave the Lady Raiders a 12-11 lead after one quarter. However, in the second quarter the Lady Raiders shot just 2-11 from the field, turned the ball over seven times and found themselves trailing 26-17 at halftime.
OSU came out strong in the third with a 10-2 run to take a 36-19 lead. The Lady Raiders immediately responded with a 12-3 run to cut the lead to 39-31, but Wheeler closed the quarter with a trio of threes to give the Cowgirls a 48-31 lead. Tech started the fourth on a 6-0 run, but OSU responded with an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach, at 59-37.
The Cowgirls shot 17-28 (.607) in the second half, giving them a 28-62 (.452) mark for the game, the third-straight opponent to eclipse a 40% clip against the Lady Raiders. OSU, which entered the game averaging 25% shooting from long range and just 2.9 makes per game, drained seven threes--six in the second half.
The teams each grabbed 37 rebounds, but Tech had 16 turnovers compared to just six from OSU. Tech also had just seven assists compared to 20 for the Cowgirls, 14 of which came from Roddricka Patton.
Rayven Brooks was the high point-scorer for the Lady Raiders, finishing with 16 points. Japreece Dean joined her in double figures with 13 points, to go along with four assists. Dean has now hit double figures in scoring 10 times this season.
The Lady Raiders will now travel to Morgantown, W.V., to take on West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
