Red Raiders Open Fall with Two Wins
October 23, 2016 | Softball
Texas Tech tallied a combined 23 runs scored in its first two games of the fall.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball opened its fall season with a pair of victories, powering past Howard College 20-5 before topping Eastern New Mexico 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Six different Red Raiders combined for seven home runs in the opener against Howard as Tech notched seven and nine run innings en route to the victory.
Â
"I felt like we were really comfortable at the plate," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "Clearly our kids got some good hacks in and the ball went out of the yard a lot. I thought both Mattison (Maisel) and Dominique (Alcocer) threw pretty well on the mound and we played a little defense, so overall it was a good start."
Â
Senior right fielder Kierra Miles blasted the first pitch she saw out of the park and finished with two home runs in the game to go with three RBI. Senior infielder Ashley Fultz recorded a game-high three hits, including a home run, and senior infielder Susan Welborn also added a home run and three RBI.
Â
In the second game of the day, Tech featured strong performances in the circle from a pair of freshmen with Kassidy Scott and Hannah Broseman combining to give up just four hits in seven innings of work.
Â
"I thought both of those freshmen threw well," Gregory said. "I thought we competed well and did a good job of getting outs when we needed to. It's hard to be out here for six hours, so you have to be mindful of that."
Â
Tech got on the board in the bottom of the second before ENMU tied it at 1-1 in the top of the third. The Red Raiders regained the lead in the next half inning and added an insurance run in the fifth to secure the victory.
