Hartwell led a dynamic offensive attack that totaled 21 runs on the day.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team continued its strong start to the fall season, sweeping Odessa College in a doubleheader by scores of 12-0 and 9-1 Tuesday evening at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Sophomore infielder Jessica Hartwell led the charge with a pair of homeruns in the day's opening frame on her way to tallying five hits and five RBI in the sweep. Texas Tech, which outscored Odessa 13-0 in the opening frame of each game, has scored a combined 44 runs on its way to a 4-0 fall record.
Â
"Jessica (Hartwell) is playing the game at an elite level," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "She has raised her game exponentially from last year to this year. She feels it too. She feels great about her game. That's what we are driving for is to excel at an elite level. She's doing that, and it's fun to watch."
Â
Senior Brittany Warnecke also connected on a long ball in game one as the Red Raiders opened up an eight-run lead in the first inning. Fellow senior Susan Welborn notched a pair of hits that brought in three RBI as Texas Tech pushed the lead to 11-0 after three. Defensively, third baseman Ashley Fultz recorded seven putouts to help the Red Raiders post a clean effort.
Â
"We lessened our errors tonight from the first two games," Gregory said. "In the first game tonight we had zero and in this one we had two, and errors were our kryptonite last year. Becoming stronger and more confident defensively is what we have to continue to do. We are throwing well on the mound still, and clearly we are swinging it."
Â
Senior Dominique Alcocer picked up the win, her second of the fall, tossing four innings and surrendering just three hits and a walk while striking out two. Freshman Kassidy Scott entered in relief and gave up only one hit in three shutout innings.
Â
Tech again started hot in game two, opening up a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Kiani Ramsey led off with a single through the left side and was advanced to second by the next batter. A string of hits by Hartwell, senior Devon Thomey, and Scott would make it 2-0 with runners on second and third before Fultz ripped a double into left center field that plated both runs to make it 4-0. Workman would bring in Fultz with a shot off the wall, giving Texas Tech all the offense it would need.
Â
Freshman Hannah Broseman earned the win, her first of the fall, tossing four innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts to four walks. Senior Mattison Maisel carried the no-hitter into the sixth inning before Odessa was able to put up a pair of hits and push a run across.
