October 24, 2016 | Softball
Texas Tech started its fall slate 2-0 with wins over Howard College and Eastern New Mexico Saturday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball continues its fall season Tuesday, Oct. 25, with a doubleheader against Odessa College beginning at 5 p.m. Each of Texas Tech's eight fall exhibitions will take place at Rocky Johnson Field and include free admission.
Â
This marks the third and fourth contests of the fall for the Red Raiders after opening with wins over Howard College and Eastern New Mexico Saturday in Lubbock. Texas Tech splashed seven home runs off the bats of six different players to rout Howard, 20-5. In the second game, freshmen pitchers Kassidy Scott and Hannah Broseman combined to give up just four hits as the Red Raiders topped the Greyhounds, 3-1.
Â
Odessa College finished 43-22 and tied for first with Howard in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference last season with a 22-6 mark. Assistant coach Karina Cannon, entering her fourth year with the program, currently leads Wranglers after longtime head coach Joel Pricket announced his resignation in September.
Â
Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory is 2-0 in fall matchups against Odessa with Tech taking a 10-6 victory last season after an 8-1 triumph in 2014. Right-hander Dominique Alcozer got the Red Raiders off to a good start in the circle in their last meeting with the Hawks, striking out five batters through the first two innings and allowing only one hit through three innings of play. Aggressive base running provided the spark for a four-run fifth inning that would help Texas Tech put Odessa away.
Â
The Red Raiders enter their third year under Gregory. Texas Tech compiled a 23-32 record last season, including a 6-12 mark in Big 12 play. Twelve letterwinners return from last year's squad, headlined by senior outfielder Kierra Miles, who led the Big 12 and set a school record with 17 home runs in 2016 and knocked two out of the park Saturday against Howard.
Â
The remainder of Texas Tech's fall slate includes doubleheaders against Midland College Wednesday, Nov. 2, and McClennan Community College Saturday, Nov. 12, followed by the Red Raider World Series Nov. 15-17.
