Mahomes was named the Tyler Rose National Player of the Week for third time in his career Tuesday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II picked up his third honor already this week Tuesday as he was named The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.
Â
Mahomes, who was named the Big 12 Co-Player of the Week on Monday, earned the honor for the third time in his career as he was also recognized by the Early Campbell Tyler Rose Award on Dec. 2, 2014, and Sept. 9 last year.
Â
Mahomes put together one of the best offensive performances in NCAA history against Oklahoma as he posted a FBS record 819 yards of total offense, 734 yards of which that came through the air. Mahomes tied the FBS record for passing yards and also set a new mark by contributing in 100 plays altogether.
Â
In addition to his proficiency in the passing game, Mahomes logged a career-high 85 rushing yards and found the endzone twice on the ground. The two touchdowns moved him into sole possession of second place all-time among Tech quarterbacks with 19 career rushing touchdowns.
Â
Mahomes ended the night 56-of-88 overall, falling one attempt shy of matching the FBS record. His 88 attempts easily snapped both the Tech and Big 12 single-game marks that were previously held by former Red Raider signal caller Graham Harrell. Â
Â
Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, Texas, has a commanding lead among FBS quarterbacks with 3,313 passing yards this season (473.3 yards per game), which ranks second all-time nationally through seven games. B.J. Symons is the only quarterback in FBS history to pass for more yards through the first seven games in a season as he had 3,506 during the same span in 2003 on his way to setting the FBS record with 5,833 yards.
Â
Mahomes is also the national leader in total offense (3,550) and total offense per game (507.1) as well as points responsible for (210) and points responsible for per game (30.0). He has guided a Tech offense that is the FBS leader in passing yards, total offense, third-down percentage and first downs.
Â
Not including last Saturday's contest, there have only been seven occasions since 2000 where a team has accounted for more yards in a game than Mahomes had by himself against the Sooners. Mahomes engineered a Tech attack that went 20-for-25 on third downs and notched 42 total first downs en route to setting the Tech school record with 856 yards of total offense.
Â
In addition to the Big 12 and Tyler Rose honors, Mahomes was also tabbed as one of eight "Stars of the Week" by The Manning Award. Fans can visit the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Facebook page and vote for which of the eight quarterbacks they believe had the best performance of the week.
Â
Voting closes at 11 a.m. CT Thursday with the top vote getter being crowned as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Â
Mahomes and the Red Raiders return to the road Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff against TCU at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. The game will air nationally on ESPN2 and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
