Mahomes earns second academic honor this season in addition to a multitude of on-field recognitions
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II collected his second academic recognition this season Thursday morning as he was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.
Mahomes is the first Red Raider in program history to be recognized as the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was previously named a second team Academic All-American just a week ago by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, Texas, is the sixth Texas Tech student-athlete to receive the individual award as well, joining the likes of Finley Ewing IV (Men's Golf – 2013), Kim Kaufman (Women's Golf – 2013), Raphael Pfister (Men's Tennis – 2013), Jaelene Hinkle (Soccer – 2015) and Montene Speight (Track & Field – 2015).
A marketing major, Mahomes has been among Texas Tech's most successful student-athletes as he is a regular on the Dean's and President's Lists. In addition, he was also honored earlier this year on the Academic All-Big 12 first team.
On the field, Mahomes has been among the most lethal quarterbacks in the country this season with 5,052 passing yards and 53 total touchdowns, both of which that lead the country. He is also the nation's leader in total offense (5,337), passing yards per game (421.0), points responsible for (318), points responsible for per game (26.5) and total offense per game (442.7).
Mahomes is only the third FBS quarterback in NCAA history to post at least 5,000 yards of total offense in multiple seasons, joining the likes of former Red Raider signal caller Graham Harrell (2007-08) and Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011). He is the 12th quarterback to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season as well.
Mahomes' damage was not just done through the air though as he also rushed for 12 touchdowns, the most for a Tech quarterback in school history. Mahomes is the only quarterback this season to throw for 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns and also rush for 200 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Big 12 established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award beginning with the 2012-13 academic year. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport with each institution nominating one individual per sport. Each winner is selected in a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 60 percent of the team's schedules contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
