Feb. 19, 2016
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Texas Tech track & field finished its final meet before the conference championships with another top-10 mark in the school record books.
Thompson's path to a new PR & No. 10 rank in the NCAA:
5.12m/16-9.5 - ?
5.22m/17-1.5 - ???
5.32m/17-5.5 - ??? (PR)
5.42m/17-9.25 - ??? (PR)-- TTU Track & Field/XC (@TTU_TF_XC) February 20, 2016
The next bar he would face sat at a height he hadn't cleared yet this season, 5.32m/17-5.5. Once again on his third attempt, Thompson sailed over the bar and landed on the mat with a new indoor personal-best.
But he wasn't done there.
His next challenge would be a height of 5.42m/17-9.25, and just like the two before, Thompson cleared the bar on his third attempt. Along with the second-place finish, Thompson's mark is also the fourth-best clearance in school history. It is also three quarters of an inch from the lead in the Big 12 this season.
Brandon Bray started the competition at 5.22m/17-1.5, but could not clear the bar successfully.
In the women's pole vault, Haley Cook opened the day facing the bar set at 4.00m/13-1.5. However, Cook would be unable to clear the height.
The Red Raiders return to action next week for the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27, at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.
