Texas Tech Softball Powers Past Illinois State 5-2

BATON ROUGE, La. -Texas Tech softball (5-8) defeated Illinois State (3-9) 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Red Raiders' first appearance in the 2016 Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Park.Both teams started the game strong defensively, holding each other off the board through the first three innings of play.
The Red Raider bats would come to life in the top of the fourth as Texas Tech would plate two runs on four hits in the inning. Kiani Ramsey led the inning off with a five pitch walk before Kierra Miles slapped a double down the left field line. Karli Hamilton would bring both runners in on a double of her own to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead heading to the home-half of the fourth.

Texas Tech would tack on another run in the fifth as Jordan Bettiol would come around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Fultz extending the Red Raider lead to 3-0.
The Red Birds would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a two run home run by left fielder Payton Billups to pull the score to 3-2 heading to the top of the sixth.
With neither team able to score in the sixth, the Red Raiders would add two more runs in the seventh to close out the 5-2 Red Raider victory.
With Saturday's win, the Red Raiders avenged the 2000, 0-4 shutout loss and moved the all-time series record between the two teams to 1-1. The win also snapped a three game losing streak for the Red Raiders.
