Hinton opened the event with a time of 8.59 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, putting her in fourth before moving on to the high jump. From there, she cleared 1.66m/5-5.25, which was also the fourth-best mark. After a toss of 10.70m/35-1.25 in the shot put, Hinton leaped up to 30 points away from the lead after putting up the top long jump mark at 5.78m/18-11.75. Her time of 2:27.74 in the 800 meters gave Hinton the win and put the bow on a successful first pentathlon of her collegiate career.
Chris Caldwell recorded another win in the 60-meter hurdle prelims on Friday. Caldwell motored to a time of 7.77 seconds to automatically advance to Saturday's semifinals. The mark tied two others for the top spot and was the fastest by a collegian among qualifying times. It is also the second-fastest time for Caldwell this season, his top at 7.75 at the Arkansas Invitational.
In Nebraska, Shanice Stewart put together a pair of quality performances, qualifying for the finals of the women's 60-meter hurdles and grabbing the victory in the women's long jump. Stewart tallied a time of 8.47 to earn a spot in Saturday's final. In the long jump, she hit the sand at a mark of 6.22m/20-5 on her fifth attempt to distance herself from the rest of the pack. The jump is tied for the eighth-best in school history, making it the third time this season she's put up a top-10 mark in the event.
Albuquerque has been good to Bradley Adkins in 2016, who has improved his seasonal-best in the men's high jump in both trips. Last week, he reached 2.18m/7-1.75 to finish third overall. This week, he was the top collegiate performer in the field after sailing over 2.20m/7-2.5 on his first attempt at the bar. The mark ties the Big 12 lead and is fourth in the NCAA this season.
Tech also went 1-2 among collegians in the men's pole vault thanks to Kyle Thompson and Brandon Bray. Thompson cleared his first three heights on his first attempt, matching his personal-best of 5.27m/17-3.5 set last year at the Red Raider Open, to claim the top spot. Bray used two tries to clear the first bar, then cruised over 5.17m/16-11.5 to earn the second-place finish.
The Red Raiders are back in action tomorrow for the conclusion of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, with the first event beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST (women's shot put).
