Kyle Collins & C.J. Jones opened in the 400 & 800 meters at the Wes Kittley Invitational on Saturday, both earning first-place finishes. Collins charged around the track to a time of 46.75 seconds to earn the win in the 400m, while Jones clocked in at 1:49.89 in the 800m to notch the victory and a new personal-best.
Collins now sits at No. 15 on the NCAA West Qualifying list, while Jones checks in at No. 26.
Chris Caldwell also kicked off his outdoor season in the 110-meter hurdles in Abilene, posting a first-place mark. Caldwell crossed the finish line with a time of 13.67 seconds, which would've ranked third in the region, but a swirling wind of +5.2 m/s kept it from being counted in the qualifying marks.
In the men's 5000 meters, Clark Blunt ran a strong race to finish first with a time of 15:34.29. He also competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase and made a late charge to finish 0.21 seconds out of first at 9:45.51.
The Red Raiders will stay in Lubbock this weekend for their second home meet of the season, the Red Raider Open, on April 15-16, at the Terry & Linda Fuller Track & Field Complex. Tech will also send a group to the Mt. SAC Relays in Norwalk, California from April 14-16.
