LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head volleyball coach Tony Graystone has announced the completion of the 2016 schedule, which includes 13 matches at the United Supermarkets Arena.
"I like how the 2016 schedule has been put together and feel good about how it will prepare us for Big 12 play," Graystone said. "We're looking forward to starting the year with road trips to Oregon and North Dakota, and seeing some teams outside of our region, before getting back to Lubbock and starting the home schedule. We'll have a nice 5 match home stand in mid-September, and we'll be excited to get back to the U.S.A and play in front of our home crowd. The team is having a great spring season and we're really looking forward to getting started in August."
The Red Raiders will open up the season in Portland, Oregon, at the Portland State Tournament on Aug. 26-27. Last season, Texas Tech hosted the Vikings at the Lone Star Showdown. Tech will travel north again the following weekend, Sept. 2-3, for the North Dakota/North Dakota State Tournament. The Red Raiders will take on South Dakota State and North Dakota State on Sept. 2, and will conclude the tournament with North Dakota on Sept. 3.
After the first two road tournaments, the Red Raiders return home for five-straight matches at the U.S.A., beginning with Texas-El Paso at 6 p.m. Later that week, the Texas Tech Tournament will begin, from Sept. 9-10, where the Red Raiders will face Abilene Christian (noon) and Stephen F. Austin (6 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 9, followed by Texas-Rio Grande Valley (noon) and Oral Roberts (6 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Red Raiders will travel one more time before opening up conference play. Tech will square off with Rice at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14, before the UTSA Tournament on Sept. 15-16. Texas State will be the first opponent of the tournament, with the match scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15. The Red Raiders will conclude the tournament with two matches Friday, Sept. 16, against Wichita State (10 a.m.) and UTSA (6 p.m.).
Big 12 action begins Sept. 21 with a road trip to Fort Worth to face TCU. The first home conference match of the season will be against West Virginia at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24. The Red Raiders will conclude the month of September with an away contest at Baylor on the 28th.
Tech will hold four home matches during the month of October, beginning with two midweek contests against Kansas State (Oct. 5) and Oklahoma (Oct. 12), both at 6 p.m. The Red Raiders will have two weekend road trips at Kansas (Oct. 8) and Iowa State (Oct. 15), before a Friday night home match vs. Texas on Oct. 21 at six. That match will be the first of back-to-back home contests, as the Red Raiders will face Kansas at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26 before rounding out the month at West Virginia on Oct. 29.
The November slate begins with a pair of back-to-back home matches against Baylor (Nov. 2) and Iowa State (Nov. 4), with first serve set for 6 p.m. on both nights. The Red Raiders hit the road for the next two contests against Oklahoma on Nov. 12 and Texas on Nov. 16.
