Tech sent several competitors to the Mt. SAC Relays, with four turning in personal or season-bests in their events. Benard Keter, the 2015 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase, made his eagerly-awaited Red Raider debut in the event Saturday night and did not disappoint. Keter crossed the tape to finish first among collegiate athletes and fourth overall, clocking in at 8:40.43.
His mark was not only the fastest time among all collegiate athletes across the country last weekend, but also broke the 40-year-old school record, set by Terrell Pendleton in 1976. Keter now stands at No. 5 in the NCAA and leads the conference by almost 15 seconds.
Todd Mickey (1500 meters), Nick Rivera (1500 meters), and Miguel Bautista (5000 meters) also set personal or season-bests in California last weekend.
The Red Raiders will send a few competitors to Lawrence for the Kansas Relays on April 20-21, with a majority of the team headed to Waco for the Michael Johnson Invitational on April 23 for this weekend's competition.
