AMES, Iowa -- The No. 17 Texas Tech women's tennis team matched a program record for regular season victories and blitzed Iowa State 4-0 to capture its eighth sweep of the season Friday at the Forker Tennis Courts.
The Lady Raiders (20-4, 5-3 Big 12) have amassed 20 wins during three of the last four seasons under head coach Todd Petty and remained undefeated at 25-0 all-time against Iowa State (13-9, 2-6 Big 12). The 20 regular season victories tie a program record with the 1987 team and enabled Texas Tech to clinch a first-day bye at next week's Big 12 Tournament.
The Lady Raiders will head into the last two days of the regular season tied with Baylor and TCU for fourth place in the Big 12 standings. Tech trails Kansas and Texas by one match for second place.
"Hats off to our players today, I was proud of how we handled our business," Petty said. "We play an attacking style in singles today against an always very competitive Iowa State team. I'm hoping we can carry this momentum into Sunday's match and finish the regular season on a strong note."
Texas Tech grabbed a 1-0 edge and tucked away the doubles point in back-to-back matches for the first time since facing Northwestern and Kansas State on March 25 and April 1, respectively.
Sarah Dvorak and Lynn Kiro set the tone for the Lady Raiders and powered past Regina Espindola and Ana Gasparovic by a 6-1 margin at the No. 3 position. The Cyclones responded with a 6-3 win courtesy of Samantha Budai and Liza Buss over Gabriela Talaba and Alex Valenstein at the top of the lineup. On court two, Tech's Sabrina Federici and Felicity Maltby won four of their last five games to collect a 6-4 triumph and hand Annabella Bonadonna and Alejandra Galvis their first Big 12 setback of the season.
The Lady Raiders quickly stretched their advantage to 2-0 when Dvorak claimed a 3-1 victory over Budai, who had to retire due to injury. Dvorak has won three of her four outings since moving to the No. 1 singles line on April 8.
Federici and Maltby delivered the knockout punches moments apart to cap the sweep for Texas Tech. Federici routed Bonadonna by a 6-0, 6-1 margin on court five, while Maltby has won five of her last six conference matches with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory over Espindola at the No. 4 spot.
When play was stopped, Katelyn Jackson was on the brink of her eighth singles victory at the No. 6 spot and held a commanding 6-0, 5-2 lead on Gasparovic. Talaba had picked up the first set by a 6-3 margin versus Buss on court two whereas Valenstein carried a 6-5 edge on Galvis at the No. 3 position.
The Lady Raiders complete the regular season at West Virginia on Sunday. First serve is on-tap for 9 a.m. CT from Morgantown. The Big 12 Tournament will be hosted by Oklahoma State from April 28-May 1.
