The throw made her the first woman in collegiate history to break the 60-meter barrier in both the javelin and discus in the same NCAA career. Carson took it a step further and accomplished that feat in the same season.
"What a phenomenal weekend for Hannah," head coach Wes Kittley said. "I am so proud that she has made the Olympic standard for the discus and that she is having a fabulous senior year."
Before the weekend, Carson's personal-best was 54.98m/180-4. On Friday, she passed it four times with marks of 57.56m/188-10, 58.30m/191-3 and 55.79m/183-0, along with her record-breaking throw.
She also picked up her sixth win of the season in the javelin at the Masked Rider Open, hitting a distance of 54.48m/178-9. Carson is the No. 3 all-time collegiate and No. 5 all-time U.S. performer in the javelin, after tossing it to 60.42m/198-3 earlier this season. She owned all of the school's top 10 marks in the Texas Tech record books before the 2016 season started, and has added three this season, along with three in the discus as well.
The defending Big 12 discus and javelin champion Carson and the rest of the Red Raiders look to add more hardware to the trophy case this week at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on May 13-15 in Fort Worth.
