Soares Falls in NCAA Tennis Singles Championships Opening Round
May 25, 2016 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. - Felipe Soares of the Texas Tech men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 singles decision to No. 2 seed Roberto Cid of South Florida during Wednesday's Round of 64 at the NCAA Singles Championships.
For Soares, he finished with an 82-47 career singles record. The 82 victories are tied for sixth in program history with David Earhart (1980-84) since 1979. The three-time All-Big 12 First-Team performer lost a three-set match for only the second time in seven outings this spring.
Soares jumped out to a 2-0 edge to start the third set. He erased a 15-40 deficit with forehand and backhand winners and took advantage of a Cid double fault to earn the early break. However, Cid responded with four of the next five games to snatch a 4-3 advantage.
Soares answered with another service break and a hold. At deuce on his serve, Soares stuck a pair of backhand volleys to go up 5-4. Cid fired back and reeled off the final three games to notch the 7-5 triumph. He advances to face Alabama's Mazen Osama in Thursday's Round of 32.
Texas Tech has had at least one player qualify for the NCAA Singles event during 12 of the last 13 seasons.
Soares and Hugo Dojas will begin defense of their 2015 NCAA Doubles Runner-Up run and will meet North Florida's Jack Findel-Hawkins and Yannick Zuern in Thursday's Round of 32. Free video of the 2016 NCAA Doubles Championships can be accessed at www.StreamingTennis.com/Tulsa.
