LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Texas Tech No. 8 men's and No. 19 women's track & field teams only had one student-athlete complete their round of competition on Thursday, May 26, the first day of the NCAA West Preliminaries.
The rain didn't bother Baker as she tosses another PR at 50.00m/164-0! She is 2nd after flight two! #WreckEm pic.twitter.com/NnvCY2B9pO

Before the delay, senior Natalie Baker put herself in position to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after notching a double PR performance in the women's javelin. Competing in flight two, she improved with each toss, starting with a throw of 46.92m/153-11, which instantly moved her up to No. 7 in the event. Her second mark was a personal-best, traveling a distance of 48.90m/160-5, bumping her up to second in the field. Toss No. 3 was even better, keeping her in that second-place spot after hitting an even 50.00m/164-0.
Hannah Carson, the NCAA leader in the event, was three turns away from taking her first attempt, as the third flight of competition had just begun before the second weather delay would mark the ultimate end of the day. The javelin competition will resume at 9 a.m.
All running events will now be contested as quarterfinals, as the advancement procedures for the 100m, 400m, 800m, 110H and 400H will have the heat winner + the next fastest six qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Also, both the men's & women's pole vault and high jump events will be contested at the Anschutz Pavilion, located at 1575 Irving Hill Rd, Lawrence, KS 66045.
Day two of the NCAA West Preliminaries will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 27, with the women's 10,000 meters, as the Red Raiders will look to punch their tickets to Eugene, Oregon.
