Jordan Szabo was a member of Texas A&M’s 2015 SEC regular season championship squad and won two SEC Tournament titles with the Aggies.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Jordan Szabo has accepted the assistant coach position on the Texas Tech men's tennis staff announced Thursday by head coach Brett Masi.
Szabo was a part of 82 dual match victories from 2012-15 at Texas A&M. The Aggies secured four NCAA Tournament trips highlighted by a NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2015 and a NCAA Sweet 16 berth in 2013. A&M also captured the 2015 SEC regular season championship in addition to the 2014 and 2015 SEC Tournament titles and 2013 SEC Western Division crown.
"I'm extremely excited about moving to Lubbock and becoming a Red Raider," Szabo said. "I'd like to thank Coach Masi for giving me the opportunity to work with him in such a highly regarded program. I would also like to thank Coach (Steve) Denton, Coach (Bob) McKinley and Coach (Kevin) O'Shea from Texas A&M for all the help and guidance they have given me. I'm really excited about getting started, and I'm eager to meet the team and get working towards achieving our goals."
Szabo picked up 73 doubles victories fueled by a trio of 20-win season and highlighted by a final No. 56 doubles ranking with Jeremy Efferding in 2015. The pair qualified for the 2015 NCAA Doubles championships. Szabo and Efferding also garnered a No. 85 final doubles ranking in 2014.
Szabo secured 56 singles wins for the Aggies. He earned 2014 SEC All-Tournament Team honors after he clinched the deciding points from the No. 6 singles position versus South Carolina during the quarterfinal round and Florida in the championship match.
Szabo served as a student assistant coach and graduated with a general studies degree from Texas A&M in 2016. The Aggies picked up 27 wins before dropping a 4-3 decision to Texas in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
Szabo is a native of Baywater, Victoria, Australia. He won two rounds at the 2009 Junior Australian Open and held an ITF ranking of 162.
"Jordan will bring a ton of success to our program being apart of conference championship teams while at Texas A&M," Masi said. "His energy and passion for the game really shines, and we will be a better competitive team with him here. Hopefully, we can build off our success from last season and keep the train moving forward."
Texas Tech racked up a program single-season record 28 victories and clinched a share of the program's first Big 12 regular season championship under Big 12 Co-Head Coach of the Year Brett Masi last season. The Red Raiders captured a quartet of wins over ITA Top 10 teams in 2016 which included No. 3 TCU, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Florida.
Texas Tech is scheduled to return the bottom four members of its singles lineup fueled by Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya, a pair of 2016 All-Big 12 Second-Team selections. Cailleau, Sendegeya along with Bjorn Thomson and Connor Curry combined for 78 of the team's 112 singles wins in dual matches.
