Nilehn Named To Haskins Award Watch List
September 24, 2016 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's Fredrik Nilehn opens the 2016-17 season No. 5 on Golfweek's Haskins Award watch list, presented annually to college golf's most outstanding player.
Â
Nilehn took home the individual crown at the Carmel Cup after shooting a third round 5-under par 67. Over the weekend, he carded a 14-under par 202 and was one of three players to post three sub-70 rounds and the only player to have two rounds of 67 or better.
Â
Nilehn is currently competing this weekend at the World Amateur Team Championships in Cancun, Mexico, where he is currently tied for 21st at 5-under.
Â
The Haskins Award is named after Frank Haskins, a master club-maker and 34-year head professional at the Country Club of Columbus. While there, he mentored young golfers who went on to win more than 150 collegiate and amateur tournaments.
Â
The watch list will be updated weekly, rating the individual play of the nation's top five performers and noting additional intriguing prospects as potential candidates for the Haskins Award.
Â
The prestigious award will be voted on by coaches and media. Previous recipients include Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
