Texas Tech Ranked In Golfweek & Golfstat Top 25
September 30, 2016 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men's golf appeared in the top 25 of both major college golf ranking services this week, sitting at No. 12 according to Golfstat and at No. 23 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll.
Â
The Red Raiders achieved these rankings mostly due to a great performance to open the season at The Carmel Cup.
Â
As a team, the Red Raiders finished in third place at 29-under par, just one shot behind then- No. 6 Georgia, which took second. The Red Raiders outpaced three teams ranked in Golfstat's top 20 at the time – Vanderbilt (No. 4), Oklahoma (No. 14) and Arkansas (No. 18).
Â
Fredrik Nilehn took home the individual crown after shooting a third round 5-under par 67. Over the weekend, he carded a 14-under par 202 and was one of three players to post three sub-70 rounds and the only player to have two rounds of 67 or better.
Â
Nilehn was in the No. 5 spot on the initial Haskins Award watch list (Nation's best player) for his efforts.
Â
"It's nice to get the national recognition, especially from Golfstat, which can play a major part in the postseason picture," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "Our body of work at the moment is a really good performance against a really good field at Pebble Beach, so I feel the ranking is deserved. However, it's very early and there will always be room for improvement."
Â
Next up for the Red Raiders on their fall slate is the Paintbrush Intercollegiate, which will be held Oct. 10-11 in Denver, Colo.
