Former Red Raider punter signed an NFL futures contract with the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech punter Taylor Symmank has signed an NFL futures contact with the Minnesota Vikings, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Symmank, who was Tech's primary punter from 2013-15, becomes the 12th former Red Raider to join an active NFL roster, joining a growing group that includes seven players who will be part of the upcoming NFL playoffs that begin this season.
Symmank ended his Red Raider career following the 2015 season after averaging 43.6 yards per punt, the highest mark in school history. He averaged a booming 46.0 yards per punt attempt during his senior year alone, easily the highest in his career and the second-highest mark for a single season in school history.
The McKinney, Texas native was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award as both a junior and senior and also earned All-Big 12 second team accolades following the 2014 campaign. In addition, Symmank was also one of Tech's most successful student-athletes in the classroom as he was a three-time selection to the Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Symmank attended the Vikings' 2016 rookie minicamp shortly after ending his eligibility as a Red Raider. He will be added to the Vikings' "active" roster on the first day of the new league year which falls on March 9.
