Volleyball Welcomes TCU to Lubbock Saturday
October 13, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders and Horned Frogs will square off at 1 p.m. on TexasTech.TV.
LUBBOCK, Texas – After a week on the road, the Texas Tech volleyball team returns home for a matchup with TCU Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
The match between the Red Raiders (12-6, 1-4) and Horned Frogs (9-8, 1-4) will stream on TexasTech.TV with Geoff Haxton on the call.
Â
The Texas Tech volleyball program will be honoring the memory of fallen Texas Tech police officer Floyd East Jr. Saturday with a moment of silence before the match and by wearing special arm bands and blue shoe laces.
Â
Saturday is also Raider Red's Kids Club Day at the arena, and all Kids Club members will be treated to a special Halloween carnival in Club Red before the match from noon to 1 p.m.
Â
"We had a good week off," head coach Tony Graystone said. "We're looking forward to TCU, for sure. It's going to be good to be back at home and start making progress toward that next goal: that next win. We're really happy with how the week went, and we're ready to roll."
Â
Without a midweek match, the Red Raiders should be well rested and close to full strength for the first time in several weeks. Junior Reyn Akiu made her first appearance last Saturday at Kansas State after missing the previous five matches with a knee injury. Her presence next to senior Kate Klepetka on the back line is key for the Red Raiders, who rank third in the conference in digs per set during Big 12 play.
Â
Klepetka reached a career milestone last Saturday, eclipsing 2,000 career digs on a season-high 26 digs at K-State. With 2,017 digs for her career, the grad transfer from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is now one of three active Division I players in the 2,000 career digs club.
Â
TCU will be playing its third match in seven days when it heads to Lubbock. The Frogs fell in straight sets to No. 5 Texas last Sunday and then faced a quick turnaround, playing at Texas State Tuesday where they dropped a four-set decision.
Â
"They've got some size and some length," Graystone said of TCU. "Real balanced offense. They've got a couple of kids they really want to give the ball to. But, it's a program that we're real familiar with just because of the nature of how our roster is built with all of the Dallas players. And theirs."
Â
The Red Raiders have been strong at home so far this season, compiling a 5-1 mark while hitting .269 in the process. Tech is 4-4 against TCU all-time in Lubbock and trails the overall series, 6-9. While the Red Raiders dropped both matchups last season, Tech took two sets against the Frogs in Lubbock and three overall.
Â
Tickets for Saturday's match are available for purchase online, at the door one hour before first serve, or by calling 806-742-TECH. A reminder that Texas Tech's Clear Bags Policy will be in effect.
Â
The Horned Frogs
TCU sits at 1-4 in the Big 12, but has already had its first tussles with the league's top three teams in Texas, Kansas and Baylor. The Horned Frogs have also defeated K-State in four sets and lost at West Virginia in four. TCU is 1-4 on the road and 0-1 in five set matches. TCU features a three-headed attack of Ashleigh Martin (2.88 K/S), Anna Walsh (2.87 K/S) and Allye Beth Deaton (2.83 K/S). Walsh leads the team in conference play with 3.43 kills per set at a .364 clip and 0.95 blocks per set.
