SATURDAY STORYLINES
- Texas Tech will head to Kansas this weekend looking to rebound from its first loss of the season last weekend against No. 15 Oklahoma State. Lawrence has traditionally been friendly to the Red Raiders, who are 9-0 all-time in road games against the Jayhawks.
- The Red Raiders have won 10-straight in the series against the Jayhawks, their longest active streak against a Big 12 foe. Texas Tech has topped the Jayhawks by an average of 19.2 points per game over the course of the winning streak. Eight of the 10 victories during that span have come by double digits.
- Texas Tech remains among the national leaders in turnover margin this week as the Red Raiders rank seventh nationally and first in the Big 12 in the category at plus-7.
- Through four games, the Red Raiders have already forced 10 turnovers this season (5 interceptions and 5 fumbles). It took Texas Tech to its 12th game last year to force 10 turnovers.
- Nic Shimonek shined in the 2016 meeting against Kansas as the then junior came off the bench to deliver a memorable performance. Shimonek replaced an injured Patrick Mahomes II midway through the third quarter and proceeded to lead the Red Raiders to 27 points in less than 20 minutes. Shimonek, who entered with Tech leading 28-19, closed the night 15-of-21 overall for 271 yards and four touchdowns for a Red Raider offense that tied the single-game school record with eight touchdown passes.
- Texas Tech and Kansas will be meeting for the 19th time in school history Thursday in a series that has historically been dominated by the Red Raiders. Tech is 17-1 all-time against the Jayhawks with wins in each of the last 10 meetings.
- Both head coaches in this weekend's matchup previously worked together in 2012 during Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury's one season at Texas A&M. Kingsbury was the offensive coordinator on that staff, while David Beaty was the wide receivers coach for the Aggies. Beaty took over as Kansas' head coach prior to the 2015 season.
- Saturday's trip will be a return to the Sunflower State for seven Red Raiders, who played junior-college ball in the state of Kansas. This will be the first game for all seven in the state of Kansas since the group transfered to Texas Tech. Of the group, junior running back Tre King is the only Red Raider who originally hails from the state of Kansas. King, who has 131 yards and a touchdown on the ground this season, is originally from Wichita, Kansas, and played his first two collegiate seasons at Hutchinson Community College.
