The Black Squad scored three runs in the fifth to take game three
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team wrapped up game three of the annual Red & Black series with a 3-0 victory by the Black squad on Friday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
The Black team took a 2-1 series lead after scoring the game's only three runs in the fifth inning, racking up a total of five hits on the day. Black's pitching staff and defense held the Red team to just one hit, while helping squash several chances with runners in scoring position.
Â
Freshman Gabe Holt found his way on base in all three trips to the plate, earning a full-count walk in the opening frame, a single in the third inning and an RBI triple in the fifth.
Â
Junior left-handed pitcher Erikson Lanning got the starting nod for the Black team and tossed 4.0 frames of nearly-perfect ball. He racked up three strikeouts and allowed only one walk against the Red team on Friday. Sophomore righty Connor Queen and junior RHP Ty Harpenau tossed the final three innings, combining for four strikeouts, one walk and only one hit, coming in the sixth off a single from sophomore Clay Koelzer.
Â
The Black squad put a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings before breaking through for a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Zayne Willems began the frame with a single to left field and would score two batters later from first after Holt roped a triple off the right field wall for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Sophomore Grant Little followed with a single up the middle, allowing Holt to easily scamper home. Shortly after, Little stole second and advanced to third on an error, setting up sophomore John McMillon to drive him in with a sacrifice fly to center field to push the advantage to 3-0.
Â
Red had an opportunity to plate junior Cameron Warren in the top of the fourth, who reached on a hit-by-pitch with one out, then moved to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch. However, the next batter flew out and the next was caught trying to steal second to end the frame.
Â
The Red team would have another chance with two on in the sixth, but were unable to capitalize, as a quick seventh completed the game to give Black an edge in the five-game series.
Â
The two squads will be back at it on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. for the fourth game of the set at Rip Griffin Park.
