November 08, 2017 | Women's Tennis
The Lady Raiders have signed three talented additions in the 2018 signing class.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis program received National Letters of Intent (NLI) and Athletic Scholarship Agreements (ASA) from Sydney Jones, Nell Miller and Olivia Peet announced Wednesday as part of the NCAA fall signing period.
All three players will step foot on the Texas Tech campus as freshmen in the Fall 2018.
"We are excited to welcome the new Lady Raiders to our family," Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty said. "I want to first tip my hat to Boomer Saia for his diligent work with putting this class together. The major theme for each of these players is class and character. They all display the main personal characteristics that make up our program. Family first is a major thing to us and each one of these student-athletes have already bought into this concept."
Jones, a native of Carrollton, Texas, is a 5-star recruit and has been ranking as a Top 5 player in the state of Texas. She has been ranked as high as No. 18 nationally in the Class of 2018. Jones had the opportunity to play in the 2017 National Fed Cup Team Championships and went undefeated in singles action. She also was the San Antonio SCMZ Tournament Champion.
"Sydney has been one of the best players in the state of Texas," Petty said. "She has a big game and has the opportunity to get bigger. She believes in the process and is dedicated to it. I'm so excited to see her future."
"I chose Texas Tech because of Coach Petty and how amazing the chemistry is between the team," Jones said. "I knew that Texas Tech would be the place for me to grow in tennis as well as further my learning through my academics. From the beginning, my goal was to get a scholarship to a good academic school that was Top 10 Division 1 program in tennis that had a great team and great coaches. When I visited Texas Tech, I fell in love with every aspect and knew it was the college for me. I absolutely can't wait to be a part of the Lady Raider family and spend the next four years playing for Texas Tech."
A native of Manchester, England, Peet is one of the 10 nationally ranked players in England. Her career is highlighted by her victory over No. 665 WTA ranked Sarah Beth Grey on the Aegon British Tour and her Championship in the Felixtow Tournament.
"Olivia Peet is coaches kid," Petty said. "Her dad is a great coach, and she is a product of her environment. She comes from a long list of Bolton Arena players, and she will not disappoint. Liv's best tennis is in front of her and has the special gift to rise to the moment. She will be fun to watch over her career."
"I am very privileged and proud that I've been given the opportunity to attend Texas Tech University," Peet said. "Becoming a Lady Raider makes me feel motivated and enthusiastic around achieving my goals and doing the best I can for the team. The image and reputation, being a top 10 ranked university team will inspire me to work hard for both myself and my teammates."
Miller, a native of Kent, England, is a nationally ranked Top 15 player in England. Highlighting her career is a runner-up finish at the Aegon Britich Tour Tipton Tournament title and taking the WTA No. 219 ranked Ana Guilia Remondina to three sets in singles play.
"Texas Tech welcomed and inspired me during my visit which made me want to develop my tennis skills and become part of the Red Raider family," Miller said. "I am so excited about becoming a Red Raider tennis player. I can't wait to find out what Texas Tech holds for my future."
Texas Tech turns its attention to the spring schedule which begins with the Michigan Invitational from January 13-15. The Lady Raiders will play their first dual match when they head to Seattle to take on Washington on Friday, January 19.
