Red Claims Series With 17-3 Rout Of Black Team

The Red team scored 17 runs on 13 hits to win game five of the annual Red & Black Series
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team concluded its annual Red & Black Series with a 17-3 Red squad victory in game five on Thursday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Team (3-2) claimed the series after scoring 17 runs on 13 hits against the Black squad (2-3) in the series finale. Red picked up wins in games one and four by scores of 9-2 and 8-2, respectively. The Black team evened the series with an 11-3 win in game two, then took a 2-1 lead after taking game three in a 3-0 shutout.
Every member of the Red squad scored at least one run on Thursday, with seven picking up double digit run outputs. Five had multi-hit performances, led by Clay Koelzer with three hits, two RBI and two runs. Zach Rheams recorded four RBI thanks to a three-run home run in the second inning.
The Black team was held to five hits on the day, with Connor Beck once again registering three, coming a triple away from the cycle for the second time in the five-game series. Senior left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek got the start for the Red team, pitching 2.0 frames of two-hit ball, giving up one run, but striking out two.
Red got the offense rolling in the opening frame with four runs for an early 4-0 lead. The first four Red team members reached base behind a Cody Farhat single, a double from Josh Jung and a single from Cameron Warren, which brought in Farhat for the first run of the day. A sacrifice fly two batters later from Michael Davis allowed Jung to score & a wild pitch plated Warren for the 3-0 advantage.
After a pitching change, Klein sent an RBI single to center field to plate Clay Koelzer, who walked earlier in the inning, to take a 4-0 lead. Black got a run back in the bottom half of the inning after a pair of back-to-back singles, followed by a double steal from Gabe Holt and Connor Beck to put both in scoring position. An RBI groundout from Grant Little brought home Holt to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Red increased its lead with a three-run homer from Zach Rheams in the top of the second to push the lead to 7-1. Jung opened the frame with a walk and a Koelzer single put runners on the corners before Rheams' two-out dinger.
Red added two more in the top of the fifth thanks to an error and a fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 9-1. With two away in the bottom of the fifth, Beck smacked a double off the yellow stripe along the left field wall, then Grant Little brought him home with a single to right field for the Black team to make it 9-2.
Red loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and picked up a run off a walk to Klein. Then, Farhat pushed a two-RBI single down the left field line to extend Red's lead to 12-2. Warren tacked on another after sending another RBI single through into left field to go up, 13-2.
After another pitching change, Koelzer kept the line moving by rocketing a single into center field, scoring two more to give Red a 15-2 advantage. A sacrifice fly from Rheams capped the seven-run outpour from the Red team in the sixth, giving the Red squad a 16-2 lead. In the seventh, Jung drove in the team's 17th run of the day with a single up the middle, driving in Klein to make it 17-2.
Beck would close out the scoring on the day after crushing a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom half of the seventh to pull the score to its final total at 17-3.
The Red Raiders return to action for full team practice in January in preparation for the 2018 edition of Texas Tech baseball.
